Barbie Movie: 3rd viewing

I went again.

This was my third time.

Why?

What is compelling?

(I think I saw The Moonspinners twice when I was in my mid teens.

Maybe a couple of others but generally I don’t repeat movies.)

What is compelling!?

Sitting with a friend and hearing the harrumphs in the same places I felt them and the OMGs at the end.

Seeing in brilliant color a clear depiction of a culture that tries to hide, ignore, and deny its reality.

Catching even more nuances on Ken’s face.

Feeling the impact of Barbie witnessing age for the first time in her “life”.

Feeling the sense of being heard with out having to shout out about it.

Finally someone is saying out loud to the world what rumbles in me.

Feeling the possibility that this movie has the potential to break through to those that refuse to see the enormous impact of power imbalance.

Delighting in the fact that Greta Gerwig is the first sole woman director to create a billion dollar film (in 17 days!)

Looking even deeper at each sentence as it unperturbedly clearly states a truth that resonates in my bones.

Mostly….

Mostly ….

A movie that shines a light on a long held destructive dilemma in a brand new way!

And….

You know what ….

I will probably go again.

For those of you resisting:

because it might be silly…. It is, but it’s not.

Because it might provide a mirror…. It does

Because there is fear that you will see yourself…. You may.

Because someone said “ you need to go.”

You must need to go.

This movie matters.

Barbie’s journey matters.

I love this is getting the attention it deserves—- but even more ——the attention the world needs to see and embrace and believe.

Go see it.
